Michigan attractions and Terrific Towns
This
is a very charming town in the southeast of Michigan with a unique
character all its own. Founded by Harvey Bliss in 1824, 13
years before Michigan became a state, Blissfield is full of great
Victorian homes and buildings. Much of our downtown consists of
century old buildings. In 1829, the First Presbyterian Church on
Franklin Street was holding services in the log cabin of Harvey and
Nancy Bliss.
The rail line that runs through Blissfield is also a historic feature. The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad, built from Toledo, Ohio to Adrian, Michigan in 1836, was the first railroad west of the Alleghenies. Today the Adrian and Blissfield Railroad and it's Murder Mystery Dinner Train follows the same route. Another railroad-connected feature of Blissfield is the Raisin Valley Model Railroad Club and its hundreds of feet of scenic track layout available to the public on weekends. The chamber office is located in the carefully restored Depot Museum and Visitor's Center, just north of the corner of Lane and Adrian Streets.
