Craftmaker's Cabin - Harrisville, Michigan

At the southwest corner of US 23 and M-72 in Harrisville, stands a log cabin.  This cabin was built in 1937 by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) toward the end of "The Great Depression".  It was built to promote tourism in northeast Michigan and served as a rest stop and information center.  The logs are from the area and the furniture, beams and stairway are most unusual.  Later the cabin became an information center and the Chamber of Commerce occupied it.  In 1982 a craft cooperative was formed eith the help of the Michigan State Extension, which was named "The Craft Maker's Cabin".

Since 1982 the cabin has become "The Craftmaker's Cabin" where members and consignees sell their creative products.  All items are hand crafted and there is a wide variety of articles from quilts to pottery and more.  The Cabin is open from Memorial Day weekend through the last Sunday in October and visitors are always welcome.  During the spring and fall we are open only on Saturday and Sunday.  In the summer season we are open every day except Monday.  The members work in the shop and are glad to answer your questions.  In 2004 the Cabin became an Alcona County Designated Historical Site.
