Michigan getaway vacations to
Michigan attractions and Terrific Towns
The
Hart-Montague Trail is a State Park and is a paved 22-mile linear park
trail converted from an old railroad corridor. It opened in 1991
providing passage through rural, forested areas with scenic overlooks
and picnic areas along the way. In 1996 the Hart-Montague Trail
became the first of two trails in Michigan to be designated as Michigan
Trailways.
The
trail is also a designated wildlife viewing area and the platforms along
the way are perfect for viewing birds and the occasional encounter with
white-tail deer and other woodlands inhabitants. You can enjoy
hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Horse back
riding is also allowed except on the paved portions of the trail.
The trail is accessible from Hart, Montague, Mears, Shelby and New Era.
The trail head in Montague offers excellent parking and is directly
across the street from the Weathervane Inn for those seeking
accommodations.
The
bridge over the White River in Montague, Michigan is just the beginning
of a great day of nature site seeing. As you move along the trail
you will find meadows, orchards, fields and even a section of old
Michigan prairie. Bird watchers will be rewarded with a huge
variety of species and I encourage you to take a camera along. You
never know what wildlife will be encountered and there is a high
probability of seeing songbirds year round. The Hart-Montague
Trail is a convenient way to enjoy outdoor Michigan in any season of the
year.
