Historical Museum - Kalkaska, Michigan
The
museum is now housed in the train depot building pictured
here in a nearby mural. The original building was built in
1873 and burned in the "big fire" in 1910. The current
building was built immediately thereafter and opened for
business in 1911. The museum becomes a real spectacle at the
holiday season when the village decorates it and lights it
up.
The museum is a treasure trove of artifacts unlike any you
will find elsewhere. There is the life of the bearded lady,
a smokehouse made of a single hemlock trunk, wonderful old
photos and the Elmer Car.
The Elmer Car was built by Elmer F. Johnson for a local
druggist Henry Stover in 1896. The "Elmer" was last driven
in the 1971 Kalkaska County Centennial Parade. It is listed
in the Register of Antique Automobiles.
Museum open June - July - August -- Wed. - Sat. 1 p.m. - 4
p.m. -- 231-258-9719
