The Lighthouse at Ontonagon, Michigan
Here is a slideshow tour of the lighthouse at Ontonagon, Michigan. The show runs as a tour from the ground to the top. The lighthouse is located on the river just across from downtown Ontonagon, Michigan. When you enter, you are presented with an authentic experience of what life would have been like for the keeper of this lighthouse on the shore of Lake superior.
The second floor includes dining and living areas. As you continue up you can see a small bedroom with historic artifacts and eventually you move on to the master quarters and bedroom. The lighthouse at Ontonagon, Michigan also contains a lot of the original equipment and tools required by the lighthouse keeper. One is the hand-operated klaxon that the keeper had to take out to the end of the pier to signal ships.
When you get to the top you can see all the way to the Porcupine Mountains. The Ontonagon River is nearby and it flows into Lake Superior. When you come to the picture of the Ontonagon, Michigan Lighthouse image where you are looking down at the lighthouse shadow, notice the hand pointing down at a pipe in the ground. That pipe marks where the original shoreline was. Since then the silt from the Ontonagon River has added a few hundred feet of new shoreline.
Tours are available thru the Museum and the Ontonagon Historical Society.
