The pasty is as much an icon of the upper peninsula as any food item could be. As soon as you hit upper Michigan and especially when you cross "da bridge", you will find pasties and things that pass as pasties all around.

The peculiar shape of the pasty is the result of practical need. This pie was the staple meal of those hardy Cornish miners who helped develop the mineral wealth of the U.P. Guys working in the lead, iron and copper mines seldom had access to any place to wash up. To avoid consuming these metals while eating, they simply held the pasty by its crust. After consuming the tasty ingredients they just tossed the crust away.
You can explore the history of this food and the history of the copper and iron country by visiting the Terrific Towns of Calumet and Ontonagon.
The best Pasty I have had while running around the U.P. comes from Granny T's. It was so good I wanted to bring some home.
