Beaver Island, America's Emerald Isle, is full of history and mystery and, is home to some of the most pristine natural wilderness anywhere in Michigan. Less developed than some other islands, the Beaver Island archipelago is remote and rustic without being primitive. It's trails, scenic drives, gorgeous bays and abundant wildlife make it a cherished destination for nature lovers and those seeking a quiet getaway with a slower pace. Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan and part of the Beaver Island archipelago. It has been home to many peoples and nations including a unique American religious monarchy. The island is now a popular tourist and vacation destination.
This is just a snapshot of what there is to see and do on Beaver Island. It isn't possible to explore this island in three days. There is just too much to see.
Day 1 - Downtown Beaver Island brings to mind a New England fishing village. The main street follows the shore of Paradise Bay. Visit the Community Center for maps, directions and WiFi. Cool shops, museums, and restaurants are here.
Day 2 - Natural wonders abound. Plan to see the big rock, a Giant Birch Tree that is a Champion Tree contender, Little Sand Bay, the Birding Trail & Barney's Lake Trail.
Day 3 - Historic sites include two lighthouses, 3 museums, Protar's house and tomb, the ship wrecks and the circle of stones.
You can get there by Ferry in about 2 1/2 hours. Island Airways can fly you there in about 15 minutes.
