Road Trips "Up North" in Michigan
The current slide show is scenes from the Black River National Byway.
For those who were born in Michigan the phrase "up north" always meant at least north of Clare and to many of us, it meant Indian River and north from there. To the first settlers in this area the northern frontier was the Great Sauk Trail that ran from Detroit to Chicago. It is known today as U.S. 12 and north of it was untamed wilderness.
Talk to folks from Ohio or Indiana or most any other state and they think of all of Michigan as up north. I once spoke with a fellow from Ohio who was headed "up north" to Lansing to go ice fishing. Historically, north of Detroit could be called up north and the website www.upnorthmichigan.com attempts to capture that feeling regardless of what part of the state you are in.
