Deadmans Hill

Antrim, Michigan

Michigan day trip to Deadmans Hill scenic overlook near Alba, Michigan. Driving along Highway 131, in Antrim County, watch for a small brown sign announcing Deadman's Hill. The designated road leads to an overlook, Deadman's Hill, that provides a spectacular view of the steep forested hills that form the Jordan River Valley. From the parking area there is a short hike uphill to the overlook. A split rail fence is provided as a safety measure, it is very steep drop. There is also a path along the fence that allows you to get to different spots to enjoy the vista. The view is gorgeous during color time, with wave after wave of flaming hardwoods, and the river sparkling below.

This beautiful spot got its name from a tragedy. Logging the great forests was a dangerous business, particularly in the steep hills of the Jordan River Valley. One fatal accident was the death of Stanley Graczyk, known as “Big Sam”. Only 21 years of age, he was killed while driving a team of horses and big wheels loaded with logs. As he headed down the steep trail, he somehow fell beneath the wheel. “Big Sam's” final resting place is in Elmira's St. Thomas’s Churchyard.
