Iargo Springs

Iargo Springs is one of the most beautiful and least known spots in northeast Michigan.

At the base of a bluff, near the Au Sable River, pure water flows out of the ground, at a place known as, Iargo Springs. Large pools have formed, one is more than 50 feet across, and the waters are crystal clear. So clear, in fact, that it is difficult to judge the actual depth. The pathway is well maintained, and there are boardwalks, that make it easy to wander through the quiet forest. Small wooden bridges cross the streams formed, as the spring waters flow out of the earth. This was considered a sacred place, by native peoples, and it is easy to understand why. The solitude here is magical. Along with the pure water, and the views across the wetlands, the only sounds you are likely to hear, are the wind, and the cries of eagles.

Iargo Springs is easily one of the most beautiful and least known spots in northeast Michigan. Far down the cliff side are pools of pristine spring waters that have been used and revered since pre-history.  These ancient springs form large pools of crystal clear water.  What may appear to be water that is a few inches deep, is actually several feet deep.

Iargo Springs is presented as an interpretive site.  The springs are located out on the River Road Scenic Byway.  When you visit Iargo Springs you will need to be prepared to handle the steps, some 300 of them, take your time.  There are several places  on the stairs to pause, rest and enjoy the view. Keep your eye peeled for the Bald Eagles that live here.
