More Rock Carvings in Michigan

There are several locations where strange or unexplained rock carvings can be found in Michigan. Listed below are three examples.

The Newberry Tablet/McGuer Gods.- Celtic Bull on Beaver Island - Giant Faces Three Lakes

The Newberry Tablet - In 1896 a tremendous windstorm swept across the upper peninsula. One of the trees the storm blew over was on the farm of John McGuer. According to the Soo Evening News several mysterious objects were stuck in the root system of an enormous old hemlock felled by that storm. The items included 3 statues and a large stone tablet. The tablet was engraved with strange inscriptions.

The largest statue was nearly life size and seems to depict a man sitting on a sort of pedestal. The second appeared to be a woman and is a bit smaller. The third and smallest statue seems to be the image of a child. All three are of sandstone and had the appearance of great age. The tablet, found nearby, was about 18” by 25”. One side was covered with 140 inscriptions engraved in rows. Each row was made up of squares about 1 ½ inches in size.

The objects were not understood at the time of discovery because the Hittite Empire had not been discovered yet.  The tablet was written in magic quadrangles, to be read both vertically and horizontally. It has since been discovered that it is written in an ancient script known as a Cypriot Minoan Syllabary (left picture). To find this ancient syllabary in Michigan when it disappeared from the Mediterranean in about 500 BC is just like finding a finger print of the Minoan Traders.

Celtic Bull - Beaver Island

Beaver Island lies in Lake Michigan 37 miles west of the mainland off Charlevoix. The island has been home to  Native Americans, Eastern European Immigrants, Irishi Immigrants and a colony of Mormons led by a man who eventually declared himself King. The island contains many anamolous stone objects from an enormous calendar circle to standing stones. Perhaps the most enigmatic is the carving of a bull, deep in the wilderness. This artifact is very old and possible pre-dates all of the other ancient constructions on the island. Beneath the carving of the bull is a line of script thought to be ancient celtic.

 

Giant Carvings - Three Lakes

There are several enormous carved heads in the western upper peninsula of Michigan. In the same vicinity is a formation of nearly buried stones that map the constellation Orion. Also in the same region is a tree covered formation that our guide identified as a pyramid. This whole area has produced dozens of bigfoot sightings.
