Caro Getaway

Caro, Michigan Getaway - GARDEN GATE B & B

The "thumb" of Michigan covers several counties and is so often over-looked as a getaway destination, that some of the residents refer to it as the "forgotten" digit. It seems odd that this unique region is not on more "to do" lists. While it lacks the roaring waterfalls of the western upper peninsula and the frenzied shopping districts on Lake Michigan, it is perfect for some relaxation and easy going exploration. There are miles of shoreline, rivers and streams. Hikers and bikers will find very excellent trails made from old railroads.

bed and breakfastCaro, in the central part of the "thumb", is ideally located for exploring the central counties while still offering quick access to the museums and lighthouses along the Lake Huron coast. History buffs won't be able to see everything in a week let alone three days, especially if it is historic architecture that you're after. Of course, it isn't all slow paced. There are cool shopping destinations, like the Brown Elephant, vineyards, wineries and fun festivals all around.

If you stay at the Garden Gate B & B, you may have some difficulty seeing everything you plan for because they are going to pamper you to the point where you may just hang around and relax.  This Bed & Breakfast is famous for their gourmet hot chocolate, home-made cakes and cookies, luxurious thick down comforters that lead to sleeping in till mid morning and a world class collection of Bing & Grøndahl Christmas Plates.

It will certainly require more than three days to see all the "thumb" has to offer, but here are some ideas to get you started.

Day 1 - The Octagon Barn & The Sanilac Petroglyphs - The - These are two of the most unique destinations in the entire state of Michigan, both are simply one of a kind.

Day 2 - Tip of the Thumb Scenic Drive - Windfarms and Lighthouses

Day 3 - Southern  Links Trail Way - A day enjoying nature.

Winter Fun – The nearby trails and parks are great for cross country skiing and snow shoe hiking. If you plan your trip for the right time of year, Caseville is well known for a fantastic winter festival.

On a recent visit I spoke with a guest who had just enjoyed six hours in a chaise lounge at the Garden Gate B & B, reading. He said he might go out to tour the wind farm the next day but, it was a really good book and a comfy chaise lounge.
