black bearsHeaded up north for a Michigan getaway? Located in historic White Pine, the Konteka Resort, makes a perfect headquarters for exploring northwestern Ontonagon County, Michigan. The resort is just a couple of miles from the shore of Lake Superior and only a 20 minute drive from the Lake of the Clouds in the heart of the Porcupine Mountains. This vast wilderness is part of the Ottawa National Forest and that means there are dozens of things to see and do within easy driving range, from Lake Gogebic to the south, iron mine tours to the east and 4 waterfalls on one road to the west, to the famous Mystery Light in Paulding.

During the warm months of the year, the wild bears are a big attraction.  Most days at the end of the lunch period or dinner time.  The Konteka disposes of the kitchen scraps just outside the dining room.  In a few moments the wild bears will come trundling out of the trees to get their dailly treat.  The whole thing is visible through the huge windows that make up one wall of the dining room.
